Google Adds AI Running Plans and Gear Search Tools

Google rolled out Search updates featuring AI-generated marathon training plans, YouTube Music integration, and gear filters powered by its Shopping Graph.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Searches for "run club," "how to train for a marathon," and "how to choose running shoes" reached all-time highs in 2026.
  • The Canvas tool in Search AI Mode generates neighborhood-specific race training schedules and cross-training routines.
  • Google linked Search with YouTube Music accounts to create customized playlists for long runs.
  • Google's Shopping Graph of over 60 billion listings powers side-by-side running gear comparisons and local stock checks.

Google announced three Search tools designed for race preparation on September 10, 2026. The company stated that searches for running topics reached record levels this year, pointing to all-time highs for queries including "run club," "how to choose running shoes," and "how to train for a marathon."

Runners can build localized training schedules through AI Mode in Search. Google introduced the option through a Canvas tool located inside the plus menu, which generates schedules recommending cross-training and strength-building routines. The system also surfaces perspectives from web publishers and creators. In a demonstration prompt provided by Google, Search mapped out a sub-4.5-hour training plan for the Texas Marathon using neighborhood routes around Montrose for a runner logging four runs a week and long runs of seven to nine miles.

YouTube Music listeners can connect their accounts directly to Search to generate custom playlists. Through AI Mode, the integration builds song selections around specific artists to help runners maintain mental endurance and manage boredom during long-distance training sessions.

Shoppers can filter equipment against specific constraints using Google's Shopping Graph, a database containing over 60 billion product listings. The search interface handles parameters such as road shoes for wide feet, anti-chafing apparel, and price limits like lightweight hydration vests under $80. Google said the platform provides side-by-side comparisons of in-stock items alongside local store inventory availability. Google noted that the AI-generated features remain experimental.
