Google launched Sheets canvas on August 13, 2026, introducing a feature that transforms spreadsheet rows and columns into interactive mini-apps without manual coding. The tool uses Gemini artificial intelligence to generate visual layouts based on plain text prompts. Users start the process by opening a spreadsheet and selecting the "create canvas" option inside the Ask Gemini side panel.
The interface functions as a dynamic read-write layer positioned directly on top of standard spreadsheet data. Google said updates made on the canvas or in the underlying sheet stay synchronized in real time. Because each canvas lives as a tab within Google Sheets, users can share the layout with collaborators using standard sheet permissions.
Users can adjust layouts, visual designs, and features by issuing follow-up prompts to Gemini. Google outlined several applications, including study trackers to manage subject deadlines, set reminders, and visualize weekly schedules. For sports analytics, the tool creates custom command centers to compare player statistics side by side and track roster performance.
For event planning, Sheets canvas converts guest RSVP lists into interactive seating charts where guests can be moved between tables using drag-and-drop controls. These adjustments update the central spreadsheet automatically.
Sheets canvas is available globally in English for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers. Google began rolling out the tool on August 13, 2026, to Google Workspace customers on Business or Enterprise Standard and Plus plans, alongside Google AI Pro for Education add-on subscribers.
