The fire department at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley will perform aircraft firefighting training on Moffett Federal Airfield beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8 through Friday, Sept. 11, NASA announced.
Ames fire personnel will conduct the training sessions daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. PDT. The exercise will involve the active use of an aircraft fire simulator that is fueled by propane.
Because the aircraft simulator is fueled by propane, very little smoke should be produced during the controlled training fires. NASA noted that flames from the simulator may nevertheless be visible to drivers traveling nearby on U.S. Highway 101.
First responders at the Silicon Valley center will use the four-day exercise to prepare for a variety of realistic aircraft firefighting scenarios. The operation is intended to ensure personnel are ready to respond to emergencies at the airfield.
