YouTube to Count Views the Moment Videos Start Playing

YouTube will count a view as soon as a video begins playing starting August 24, aligning standard videos with Shorts, TikTok, and Instagram.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • YouTube will count views the moment video playback begins starting August 24, 2026.
  • The previous counting system will remain available inside Analytics under the metric name 'engaged views.'
  • The change will not alter creator earnings or current YouTube Partner Program eligibility, though YouTube plans to raise partner requirements next year.

YouTube will begin counting a view the moment a video starts playing, changing how it tallies audiences across standard uploads, TechCrunch reported. The update takes effect on August 24, and the company noted that creators will likely see their public view counts accumulate faster once the system goes live.

The change brings YouTube's standard video format into alignment with TikTok and Instagram, which count views as soon as playback or a replay begins. By comparison, X counts a view once a user watches a clip for at least two seconds. YouTube adopted the instant-play counting system for its own Shorts format last year.

YouTube plans to preserve its traditional viewing data under an "engaged views" metric inside the creator Analytics dashboard. The platform had not fully detailed the exact requirements of its older system, though industry convention held that a viewer had to watch at least 30 seconds of standard video for a view to register.

Creator earnings and existing eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program will not be affected by the new count. The company is, however, planning separate changes to the partner program that will raise the entry requirements for new creators next year.

YouTube said the shift aims to simplify reporting across its different video types. "Historically, we’ve used multiple view counting systems across different formats," the company noted in its update post, stating that creators requested an end to "metric confusion" and wanted a clearer measure of overall exposure across formats.
