NASA is scheduled to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Aug. 30, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The space agency designed the observatory to scan large areas of space and answer fundamental questions about the universe.
The observatory will operate from an orbit around the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, known as L2, located approximately 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth. NASA stated that this gravitational position provides an orbital parking spot with unobstructed views of space. The telescope relies on a 7.9-foot (2.4-meter) primary mirror to gather infrared light through cosmic dust.
Light collected by the mirror will feed into two onboard science instruments. The Wide Field Instrument is a 300-megapixel infrared camera designed to capture light that has traveled for billions of years, helping astronomers trace how the universe expanded over time. The Coronagraph Instrument blocks glare from stars so astronomers can observe orbiting exoplanets that are nearly one billion times fainter than their host stars.
Scientific Objectives
Scientific priorities for the mission center on dark energy, exoplanets, and dark matter. Dark energy accounts for about 68% of the universe and drives its accelerated expansion. Recent observations indicate that dark energy pressure is shifting over time, and researchers plan to use Roman to analyze its exact nature.
Exoplanet research will focus on discovering worlds outside our solar system. Astronomers have identified more than 6,000 exoplanets so far out of a predicted population of billions. NASA expects the observatory to locate unusual planetary systems as well as planets located within the habitable zones of their stars.
Dark matter observations will trace how galaxies and galaxy clusters formed across cosmic history. If dark matter consists of heavy, slow-moving particles, galaxy formation would occur early in cosmic history. If dark matter is composed of lighter, faster-moving particles, structural development would take longer to settle into clumps.
Mission History and Staffing
The mission's namesake, Nancy Grace Roman, served as NASA's first chief astronomer and its first female executive. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 16, 1925, Roman led the development of the Hubble Space Telescope before her death on Dec. 25, 2018.
More than 1,000 engineers and technicians built the space telescope using millions of individual components. Technical roles on the project included instrument technicians who installed and calibrated sensor equipment, mechanical engineers who designed mechanical systems, and astrophysicists. NASA noted that the mission also required personnel across photography, management, videography, and social media.
