OpenAI plans to sell its upcoming artificial intelligence smart speaker for between $300 and $400, according to reporting by Ars Technica and TechCrunch. The hardware project, previously described as an AI-fueled smart speaker, is designed to serve as the physical manifestation of ChatGPT inside homes.
The device will feature a donut-shaped design, allowing users to carry it around their home and set it in different locations, such as a kitchen counter or a bedside table. According to details reported by Bloomberg, the device will be constructed from high-quality metal to deliver a premium look and will incorporate distinct moving parts.
A price tag ranging from $300 to $400 makes the product potentially more expensive than average smart home devices. For comparison, most smart home speakers from Amazon range in price from $40 on the low end to $240 on the high end. Smart speakers have historically not always been profitable and have proven to be a difficult market to break into, a dynamic that could be further affected by a high price point.
OpenAI is building the device in partnership with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by famous former Apple developer Jony Ive. Bloomberg reports that the device will likely be released at some point in 2027.
The attempt to enter the consumer hardware market has encountered friction outside of development. Hardware maker Apple is suing OpenAI, accusing the artificial intelligence laboratory of stealing trade secrets. OpenAI has denied all wrongdoing.
