NVIDIA Releases GeForce NOW Linux App and Cloud Upgrades

NVIDIA graduated its native Linux GeForce NOW application from beta and introduced server-side performance improvements for cloud streaming.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The native Linux GeForce NOW app graduated from beta with official support for Ubuntu 24.04 and later via a Flatpack repository.
  • Cloud-side DLSS Frame Generation optimizations reduced latency for streams running at 60 or 120 frames per second at 1440p and 4K.
  • Performance members received automatic CPU performance adjustments on the server side for CPU-intensive titles at no extra cost.
  • Eligible new Chromebook and Chromebook+ buyers can receive one year of GeForce NOW Fast Pass with priority server access and no ads.

NVIDIA has officially brought its native Linux app for GeForce NOW out of beta, supporting Ubuntu 24.04 and later versions through a new Flatpack repository. The company announced the update alongside new cloud optimizations for latency, frame rates, and Chromebook promotions.

The native Linux app offloads graphics rendering to NVIDIA's cloud servers, giving users access to GeForce RTX performance without requiring local hardware upgrades or compatibility workarounds. NVIDIA stated that the production release incorporates months of community feedback to improve software stability and performance.

Server and Stream Optimizations

NVIDIA optimized its cloud implementation of DLSS Frame Generation to reduce latency during streams. The company said the responsiveness gains are most noticeable when streaming games at 60 or 120 frames per second at 1440p and 4K resolutions.

For Performance tier subscribers, NVIDIA rolled out automatic server-side CPU performance adjustments. The software update improves frame rates in select CPU-heavy games without requiring members to install patches or pay extra fees.

Chromebook Offer and New Titles

The cloud gaming service now streams more than 2,000 supported PC games across Macs, Surface devices, laptops, Steam Decks, mobile devices, and Chromebooks. NVIDIA is offering eligible new owners of Chromebook and Chromebook+ laptops a free one-year subscription to GeForce NOW through a program called Chromebook Fast Pass, which includes priority server access and ad-free streaming.

NVIDIA added seven titles to the GeForce NOW library this week:

  • Car Wash Simulator (Steam release from Aug. 10)
  • Pax Autocratica (Steam release from Aug. 10)
  • Clawed (Steam release from Aug. 13)
  • Hell Let Loose: Vietnam (Steam release from Aug. 13)
  • Sandustry (Steam and Xbox release from Aug. 13)
  • Cat Mail Co. (Steam)
  • Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo (Steam)

In a recent video highlighted by NVIDIA, content creator Madelyn called GeForce NOW "a game changer" for making high-performance cloud gaming affordable and accessible across nearly all of her devices.
