Apple Maps has officially changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, joining Google in re-labeling the Great Lake across its navigation platform, TechCrunch reported. The update follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in the midst of a trade dispute with Canada.
Regional versions of the software display the body of water differently. The Canadian version of Apple Maps still shows “Lake Ontario” when panning over the area, while international versions of the app show both names. Google updated its map shortly after the revised name went live in the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), while Apple waited longer before rolling out the change.
Federal directives have altered naming conventions across both platforms before. Both Apple and Google changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America following a similar executive order signed by Trump last year.
MapQuest refuses to change the name of either body of water on its mapping platform. That refusal has likely helped propel MapQuest to the top spot on Apple’s App Store.
