Apple Announces iPhone Duo as Its First Foldable Phone

Apple revealed the iPhone Duo, a passport-sized foldable featuring a 7.6-inch inner display and a titanium frame reinforced with ceramic fibers.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch cover screen and an unfolding 7.6-inch inner display.
  • Apple built the chassis using titanium reinforced with ceramic fibers three times stronger than grade 5 titanium.
  • The phone carries an IP68 rating and omits both the Dynamic Island and Face ID cameras.
  • Foldable devices accounted for 1.6 percent of all smartphone sales in 2025.

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on Wednesday, introducing the company's first foldable smartphone more than seven years after Samsung launched the original Galaxy Fold. The announcement came during Apple's launch event alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The Duo unfolds from a 5.4-inch exterior screen into a 7.6-inch inner panel, giving the handset passport-like proportions when closed. Both screens use the exact same aspect ratio. The 7.6-inch display is the largest panel fitted to an iPhone to date, measuring 50 percent larger than the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max and 80 percent larger than the standard iPhone Pro display.

Titanium forms the primary structure of the frame, reinforced with internal ceramic fibers three times stronger than grade 5 titanium. Apple fitted Ceramic Shield 2 to the front and toughened Ceramic Shield glass on the rear. The phone carries an IP68 dust and water resistance rating and ships in two colors: star white and night sky, a dark blue.

A front selfie camera sits in the rounded corner of the cover display. The device omits Apple's Dynamic Island cutout as well as Face ID cameras.

TechCrunch reported that rival manufacturers including Samsung, Google, Huawei, Oppo, and Honor released various book-style, flip, and trifold models after 2017 reports projected an Apple foldable by 2020. Foldable devices accounted for 1.6 percent of all smartphone sales in 2025.

Huawei, Samsung, and Xiaomi each released foldable phones in roughly that passport form factor earlier this year. Those releases followed two years of reports indicating that Apple had focused on a short, wide book-style foldable.
