A professor at Central South University in Changsha, China, called for regulatory overhauls to allow female researchers into underground mines, Nature reported. The researcher, appointed this year as the mining-engineering department’s first female professor, stated that facilities in China and abroad routinely bar female scientists from descending underground. These bans occurred even after she planned fieldwork, travelled to mine sites, and designed deep-mine monitoring and warning systems operating below.
China’s 2012 labour law prohibits underground mine work for female employees to protect health and workplace rights, and dozens of other countries enforce similar restrictions. Mine operators enforce these rules against immediate hazards, including unstable rock formations, heat, water, dust, heavy equipment and restricted escape corridors. Research by O. S. Mokwena and colleagues published in the journal Safety in 2026 documented that women face unique safety risks in underground environments.
Engineering tasks in modern mining now extend far beyond excavation, encompassing seismic signal analysis, ventilation modelling, core examination, remote-control operations and ecological restoration. Technical teams also test sensors and oversee autonomous machinery from the surface. Because risk exposure varies across these technical duties, the author outlined a three-tier regulatory framework to replace blanket prohibitions.
High-exposure, long-duration production work would retain the strictest statutory protections under the proposed framework, barring companies from using inclusion policies to cut staff or lower safety thresholds. Short visits for research or instruction would follow a lawful protocol requiring site risk assessments, mandatory training, fitted protective equipment, strict time caps, real-time tracking and voluntary consent. Candidates applying for surface roles would face evaluation based on technical competence rather than legacy access rules. When teams cannot guarantee safety measures or can finish tasks from the surface, underground entry would not occur.
