Apple introduced its new Apple Home Collection on Tuesday, expanding into home hardware with a smart deadbolt lock, video doorbell, thermostat, temperature sensor, and security cameras, TechCrunch reported. The hardware lineup will arrive in December.
Every device connects through HomeView, Apple’s new smart home hub designed to manage accessories and run Apple software. To manufacture the hardware, Apple partnered with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric, shifting away from its typical approach of developing and supporting connected home accessories entirely on its own. The launch places Apple in closer competition with established smart home brands Amazon Ring and Google Nest.
The smart deadbolt lock carries a price tag of $349.95 and incorporates ultra-wideband wireless technology. Ultra-wideband provides more precise proximity detection than conventional Bluetooth, allowing the lock to detect an approaching authorized user and unlock the door automatically without requiring a physical key or phone tap.
The wired video doorbell will sell for $249.95. It lets homeowners monitor visitors, view exterior spaces, and receive alerts when someone approaches the premises. When pressed, the doorbell sounds a chime through connected Apple hardware including HomeView, HomePod, and HomePod mini, while pushing alerts directly to an iPhone or iPad.
For climate control, the collection features a thermostat alongside a standalone temperature sensor. The sensor monitors conditions inside individual rooms, letting users track temperature variations across different areas of a house and adjust their settings accordingly.
Apple also unveiled multiple security cameras, including indoor and outdoor models as well as a $399.95 floodlight camera that pairs exterior illumination with video monitoring. Across the camera lineup, Apple includes live video streaming, motion detection, intelligent notifications, and recorded video storage.
