The team conducted their fieldwork across Washington state’s mossy Olympic Peninsula, examining how the distribution of apex predators interacts with human transportation corridors. Their findings confirm that the presence of cougars creates measurable safety benefits for motorists traveling across the region.
Pumas, which carry the scientific name Puma concolor and are also referred to as cougars, reduce roadway danger simply by inhabiting the surrounding territory. Where the animals maintain a presence, drivers encounter fewer deer on transit routes, reducing the overall threat of life-threatening collisions on Olympic Peninsula roads.
