OpenAI has lost more than a dozen executives since the start of the year as the company reorganizes its management structure ahead of a planned public listing, TechCrunch reported. Departures include chief executive Sam Altman's top deputy, the chief operating officer, chief revenue officer, chief marketing officer, and multiple team leads.
Chris Malone, the company's head of data centers, left last week after joining in March 2025. OpenAI told TechCrunch that the departure followed a restructuring of its infrastructure team, which now operates under vice president Sachin Katti instead of reporting directly to president Greg Brockman. Some departures across the company stemmed from health issues, while others followed reorganizations designed to cut expensive side projects and prioritize revenue generation.
Brockman is reasserting operational authority across the company. While he was relieved of most management responsibilities in 2019 when Altman became chief executive, both infrastructure and product teams now report to him. “I like to say that everyone reports to Greg at the end of the day,” said Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI's API and app offerings. The shifts follow earlier exits of outside executive hires, including Fidji Simo and Kevin Weil.
OpenAI filed confidential going-public disclosures with the SEC in June, though its initial public offering is not expected until 2027. The company's losses are reportedly growing alongside its revenue, while rival Anthropic is reportedly profitable ahead of its own planned debut. Alongside the executive turnover, OpenAI released its GPT-5.6 model, and its desktop app for agentic coding and workplace tasks added about 15 million subscribers over the last two months.
