Google DeepMind has collaborated with documentary filmmakers to recreate an unrecorded memory for an elderly couple facing cognitive decline, using artificial intelligence in a short film titled "Love, Rendered."
The documentary follows Burt and Ethelle Shatz, who have been married for more than 70 years, according to Google. Burt's memory loss threatened to erase the moment the couple first met at a student co-op in Cleveland. Because neither photography nor video captured that initial encounter, the event survived solely in their recollections.
Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Liz Garbus directed the short, producing it alongside Dan Cogan and Darren Aronofsky. Google DeepMind developed the recreation in partnership with Primordial Soup, Aronofsky's creative production venture.
The filmmakers based the project around concepts drawn from reminiscence therapy, a clinical method that uses sensory cues like music and photographs to spark memory recall. Garbus previously observed neural responses to familiar voices during her documentary "Coma," while Aronofsky watched an Alzheimer's patient recall ballet choreography when listening to "Swan Lake."
Engineers executed the digital recreation through a two-part technical pipeline. First, generative models restored archival black-and-white photos of the couple from their youth. Next, performance capture systems tracked the couple's present-day micro-mannerisms—such as speech hesitations, eye crinkles, and head tilts—and mapped them directly onto the restored younger models. Ethelle Shatz participated directly in the production sessions, refining visual details such as staircase architecture and shoe designs.
Google also integrated photograph restoration tools into its consumer products alongside the project. Users can submit older photographs to the Gemini application with text prompts requesting colorization and restoration while preserving facial expressions and poses.
